The Rheinland Pfalz, Germany's second largest wine region
only second to Rheinhessen to the north and the French Alsace region to the south. Rheinland Pfalz is important historical region playing a key role in the Holy Roman Empire. This beautiful region boasts breathtaking surroundings including the Haardt Mountains covered in trees, castle ruins and fruit trees. The Pfalz region is known for the use of modern technology and traditional viticulture methods. In fact, the wine tourism industry contributes significantly to Rheinland-Pfalz's economy and tourism.
The climate & terrior of the Rheinland Pfalz

Compiled of the perfect conditions. It is the warmest of of the regions in Germany. The summers are dry and not too hot. The winters are mild. Because of the mild climates, this region is able to grow several grape varieties. The soils contain sandstone, limestone, marl, loess-loam, granite and a few isolated areas of slate.
The Grapes of the Rheinland Pfalz
Sixty percent of the vineyards in this region are white wines and forty percent reds. Like most of the German vineyards, Riesling is top dog. Riesling is Germany's most successful grape for quality and quantity. The Pfalz region's wines are richer and riper than others found in Mosel, Rheingau and Nahe. The next most popular grape is the Dornfelder. This grape variety is a red wine variety created in 1956 and has become popular throughout Germany. It's beautiful in color and aroma. Other grapes grown here are Muller-Thurgau and Portugieser.

would have the opportunity to attend possibly the world's biggest wine festivals! Wurstmarkt. The festival is in Bad Durkheim, a village in the Pfalz. Wurstmarkt wine festival will be your chance to taste the best wines of the region and walk or bike thru the vineyards! A bunch of wineries also open their doors and offer wines tastings & tours. Most of the time the wines are paired with local snacks or traditional dishes. If you are lucky, you'll get to meet the winemaker!
